When going to work, employees rarely think their day might end with a life-changing injury, like losing a limb. But if it happens to you, starting rehab early is key for recovery and adjusting to your new life. It is also important to know your rights and what benefits you can get.
Why early rehab is important
Starting rehabilitation as soon as possible after an amputation greatly help your recovery by:
- Speeding up healing and reducing complications
- Making you stronger and more flexible
- Boosting your mental and emotional health
- Helping you become more independent in daily tasks
- Getting you ready for a prosthetic fitting, if needed
- Lowering the chance of other health issues
A comprehensive recovery program typically includes physical therapy, occupational therapy and psychological support and counseling.
Getting all the help you need and deserve
Worrying about rehabilitation costs is common. In Rhode Island, workers who lose limbs due to workplace accidents may receive workers’ compensation benefits. These include medical treatment, disfigurement or loss of use benefits, and rehab costs.
Your employer’s insurance might start sending you weekly payments on the fourth day after the injury. The Weekly Compensation Rate is 62% of your average weekly wage, but it can change once you reach maximum medical improvement.
It is essential to inform your employer about the injury as soon as possible, preferably within 30 days. Your employer then should file a First Report of Injury with the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training (DLT) within 10 days.
If your employer or their insurance does not pay benefits, you might need to file a formal claim. Consulting with an attorney can be very helpful in this situation.
